| Alan Hunter's photographic mission began in the early eighties in his native northeast. A student at the Spectro Arts facility and Newcastle Media Workshop, in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, he fine-tuned the black and white developing techniques, standing him in good stead today as one of the countries leading monochrome artists.
Photographically, this period saw Alan develop a gritty documentary approach to his subject, involving people typically interacting with their environment. Acutely aware of the effect of the post-industrial era on Tyneside, an area previously dependent upon heavy industry, mining and fishing, his first exhibition records the remnants of this once flourishing region. Photographs of cloth-caped locals reveling in a game of dominoes evoke echoes of a culture now in decline. |
